DNA Cousin Home Collection Kit Buccal Mouth Swab Supplies

What happens at the Lab?

In a DNA cousin test, a buccal swab (mouth swab) is collected from each alleged cousin.

The swabs collect cells that contain DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). This DNA serves as a unique “genetic blueprint,” akin to a fingerprint, distinguishing each individual.

Upon reaching the laboratory, the DNA is isolated from the cells, and specific segments of the DNA undergo amplification through a process called PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Our test meticulously examines 16 to 27 of these specific segments, known as short tandem repeats (STRs). STRs are segments of DNA in which a short sequence is repeated multiple times.

The DNA profiles of both potential cousins are then compared, and a statistical analysis is performed based on the match type typically expected for biologically related cousins.

Note: While parentage tests yield conclusive results, the cousin test offers a probability assessment, indicating the likelihood that the individuals are first cousins as opposed to having no cousin relationship.

If the parties to be tested live in different cities, we can split the kit for you and send the kit components to different addresses. Since the cousin test kit components are individually barcoded, the samples will still be tested together once they arrive at the laboratory. To order a split kit, simply enter the following information in the comments box of the order form when you check out.

“Please split this kit. Send one cousin’s portion of the kit to (Cousin’s name and shipping address), and send the other cousin’s portion of the kit to (Cousin’s name and shipping address).”

An extra shipping fee of $10 will be automatically applied for each additional address within the US. Split kits will be shipped out using USPS First Class Package Service.

If the parents of the alleged cousins are accessible for testing, we strongly advise opting for the DNA Paternity Test or DNA Maternity Test instead of the DNA Cousin Test. In cases where the parents of the alleged cousins can’t undergo testing, the DNA Sibling Test is preferable to the DNA Cousin Test, as the former, while not as robust as a parentage test, is more powerful than a cousin test.

The DNA Cousin test should be considered only when there is no possibility of undertaking any other test type, as it is the least potent among the available kinship tests. While parentage tests consistently yield indisputable results, the cousin test provides only a likelihood that the individuals are first cousins, as opposed to having no familial connection.

DNA is collected using a buccal (mouth) swab. The sample collection is safe, painless and can be completed in only 15 seconds.

The turnaround time for DNA Cousin testing is 1 to 3 business days from the date samples are received by our laboratory. The results of the test are provided immediately upon completion.

* Orders received before 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the same business day, while orders received after 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the next business day. Express shipping typically takes 1 business day for most addresses within North America, however delivery to some rural addresses may take 2 business days.b

The DNA cousin test kit does not have an expiration date, so you can purchase it in advance and take it at any time. After the samples are collected, the DNA is good for at least 3 months at room temperature so you have lots of time in the event that you cannot send it back right away for testing. Just remember to follow the instructions in the kit to ensure that you collect the samples correctly.

The At Home DNA Cousin Test will provide a likelihood that the two individuals tested are first cousins versus not related at all. The test analyzes specific markers on the individuals’ DNA and calculates the degree of genetic similarity between the two.

Please note DNA cousin testing is not as conclusive as parent-child DNA testing, as the relationship between cousins is more distant and there may be a greater degree of genetic variation between the individuals being tested. If you are looking to establish a parent-child relationship, it is recommended to get a Paternity Test or Maternity Test in lieu of the Cousin test.

Yes, the DNA cousin test can be done for individuals at any age, even newborns.
